97 mercury sable GS wagon - I have a p1742 code. I can't afford a mechanic so I want to remove the trans myself. What all does that entail? Any specialty tools needed for that job?

Trans removal on a front drive car is typically very involved with a lot of disassembly required. You usually need to support the engine from above when the transmission is removed, as well as needing as suitable jack to hold the trans when it is separated. (There are special jacks sold for transmissions though a motorcycle jack may do the trick.)

Although I have not done this job on your particular make/model of vehicle I have done it on others and can tell you it is a bear to do in your driveway with the car on jackstands.

You can find a repair manual for your car in the link below which may help:

For some reason, your browser is generating several duplicates when you submitted your post. (You accidentally posted this topic 4 times.)

Are you having network issues? If so, then please wait until you have a stable connection. If you are pressing the submit button more than once, please stop. Press it once, and wait for it to finish processing. (You will find in most cases if you return to the main page that your post was processed immediately even if the submit button appeared unresponsive.) Otherwise it creates more work for moderators to clean up, and eventually the system will automatically ban your from entering.

Thanks.
