1989 Chevrolet Camaro AC compressor noise

Hi.

The AC compressor of my 1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS with 51k miles is making a noise once in a while. It is a Harrison 1131635.

It makes that sound even when I don't use the AC or even the heater at all.

What should I do?

If it's making the noise when the AC isn't even on, the pulley bearing is probably worn. Take the fan belt off and spin the compressor pulley by hand to check for roughness and noise.

OK it is the pulley indeed. I asked my mechanic if he can fix the pulley and he said that he has to replace the whole compressor. So
1. Is that true?
2. Do I have to worry about this noisy pulley? That little noise doesn't really disturb me.
3. Could it just be that the refrigerant is low?

If you don't address the problem the pulley will eventually seize up and leave you on the side of the road. Low refrigerant would not affect the pulley bearing.

The rockauto.com database shows all 1989 Camaros regardless of engine size came with an "LT4" compressor. Does your compressor look like this?

They do show a clutch assembly available separately, which includes the pulley and bearing, but given the age of the compressor it would probably not be a bad idea to replace it. A new (not rebuilt) "Genuine GM" compressor costs about $231, "AC Delco Gold" about $260.)

Thank you for the info.
I just realized when I turn the AC is on, the noise is gone. I almost never use the AC. Perhaps that might be the reason why and I should just leave it on?

The noise is gone with AC on because the pulley is no longer freewheeling on its bearing, it's locked to the clutch plate attached to the compressor crankshaft.

At some point it's going to have to be replaced. Up to you if you want to buy some time by leaving your 33-year-old AC compressor on all the time, including winter.

OK. But I did a long drive with my car with the AC on and now it works perfectly fine. No noise, even when the AC is off. I almost never used the AC. I preferred to roll down the windows to listen to the sound of my V8 😆

Should I still put a new compressor on?

Not really necessary if it's working and not making noise but I'd definitely keep an eye (and ear) on that pulley bearing.
