How do I improve my fuel economy

Topic starter

I've recently purchased an Acura MDX 2012 with 156K miles, I'm having some issuess like engine light on (with code P0302 of cylinder 2 misfire that only comes up after driving a longer range - doesn't show up immediatley again after clearing the code).

I'm getting terrible mileage on this car, what are some reccomended things to do that might increase it?

I'm a complete newbie to cars.

thank you in advance.

Step 1: Fix the misfire. This hurts economy a lot. Covered in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Step 2: Read the topic "Why am I getting poor fuel economy? & how do I improve it?" (also in the FAQ)

doesn't look like the cylinder is misfiring often (it drives normal with no apparant noise or bumps), is it still important to fix?

Yes it's very important. It should not misfire at all. If you are getting a warning light on the dash then it's already pretty bad.
Continuing to drive with a misfire will destroy your catalytic converter ($1,000's to replace)

And you want to improve your economy, right?

See the site FAQ entry on gas mileage tips. Beware of useless scam gadgets and additives that purport to improve gas mileage but serve only to drain your wallet and may damage your car.
