Scotty, love your channel and have learned a crazy amount from you. THANK YOU!
I live in Kansas City and was working in Milwaukee and cats were stolen out of hotel parking lot. Had planned to get security plates but didn’t pull the trigger as I should have. Now they’re on order. With cats backordered with Toyota, I knew that the only way home was to limp it to Midas 2 miles away and fortunately they found aftermarket cats and fixed me up. Of course now I know the hard way that they don’t play nice with the ECU and check engine light is on. Is this effecting the A/F ratio? Driving smooth. Made it home just fine. But mpgs were 14 and had been getting 15-16 on highway. It’s a ‘16 with 70k miles. Can I clear the false code? Will it foul plugs if I don’t? Worried that I’ll be screwed when I go to trade it in for a ‘21 which I plan to do in a few years. After $1K deductible I’m not inclined to shell out $4k to put OEM on.
You need to have it scanned for codes and find out what is happening upstream of the cats that's causing the problem.
Yep, was going to do that. Would i need to go to Toyota to get most accurate diagnosis? Had no issues before replacing cats and both rear o2 sensors. Do the rear o2 sensors effect the tune or purely to monitor whether cats are operating properly is my biggest question.
I’ve read many many forums that Tundra cat monitoring if very fivkle.
I wouldn't go to a Toyota dealer to find out what day it was. In these engines, everything affects everything by sending signals to the computer to constantly adjust the ignition timing, air/fuel ratio, etc. CATs fail for a reason, overly rich mixture, oil burning, etc.
You have a catalyst system efficiency DTC. Call Midas and tell them. There's Federal (EPA) law that protects you when buying aftermarket cats.
New aftermarket converters are required to have a five year, 50,000 mile warranty on the converter shell and end pipes.
They are also required to be warranted to meet EPA's emission performance standards for 25,000 miles when the vehicle is properly used and maintained.
