Thanks for your reply . I connected the refrigerant to the low pressure  port and got a r eading of 159 psi . I know thats not good but what is it telling me about the system?

Most likely your expansion valve is stuck near the open position. Get a cheap set of gauges and observe the high side pressure to confirm

I will do that jack62. I should have checked the high side when I check the low side. Thanks

What does your full manifold gauge set show for high and low side pressures while the compressor is running?

The compressor doesn't kick on at all, even with a jumper wire at the pressure switch plug. But the fans come on as normal.

You really need to see both low and high sides, with the AC system at rest they should be equal. Although you can't tell a whole lot from static pressure, especially checking just the low side, that sounds pretty high unless your ambient temperature is around 115 degrees (and it is in some places).

It sould be 30-40 psi for the low pressure. Do as jack62 suggests.

Will do. Thanks
