I have a '98 toyota avalon just getting broke in at 268000 miles.  The air/heat diverter? Knob(the one that switches between floor, vent, defrost, etc. doesn't do anything anymore.  No matter what I move it to it stays blowing out the vents.  Being in South Dakota, having no defrost this time of year can have it's issues.  I believe it is an electrical switch under the driver side dash if I gave done me research correctly.  But it's impossible for me to be able to see up there....any advice/ am I on the right track?

Thank you.

Do the knob show the change or not?

I'm not 100% sure what you mean...my knob doesn't have separate indicator lights for each setting. I can feel it "click" at each setting though.

If it clicks, then try whacking your dash to see if the blend door actuator is stuck close or not. If that did not help, you need to open the dash which is pretty expensive.
