I have a 2007 Honda Accord Coupe EXL V6 with the 5-speed automatic transmission. Overall it runs great and I have 211,000 miles on it. I have been very religious on maintenance, it has never missed an oil change and I have always kept up transmission fluid/ service as well. It pains me to sell it, but my parents have been on me to buy a new car for a long time, and I have finally caved. I have a new car on order. I have been thinking of selling my Accord as a private party, but I wanted to get your honest thoughts on what repairs in might need in the near future. My biggest concern is the transmission which is still original as well as the engine.
Alternator, Starter (OEM) and front struts (aftermarket) have all been replaced in the past year or two. Tires and brakes are good. I am concerned however about the transmission given the mileage, age, and considering it is an automatic V6 Accord. It always shifts smooth and I have not noticed any strange noises or roughness. However, one time a few years ago, it seemed to slip out of gear while on the interstate but after shifting between drive and neutral a couple of times it recovered. It never did that again, I think I had the ATF changed soon after that. Just recently I had noticed the "D" light flicker on the instrument cluster gear select indicator occasionally while I was on the interstate during a long drive. It does not steadily flash, it would just briefly flicker off while driving. I understand a flashing D light indicates a transmission fault for these cars. I don't see myself spending to replace the transmission in it.
Would this light flicker indicate the beginning of the end for this transmission? If I sold this car to a friend do you have any idea how much life this transmission could have left in it? Could a scan tool uncover anything about the transmission at this stage? I have no check engine light illuminated currently.
Well, it sure sounds like the transmission starting to go out, especially the V6 Honda's eat up transmissions much faster than the four cylinder ones do because of the extra power. But what the heck you can keep driving it. I don't know if you'd want to spend the money to do one of those transmissions over correctly is going to cost you anywhere between $3, 500 to 5500 bucks
