My gas gauge isn't reading right in a 2013 Dodge Challenger and the dealership says I "PROBABLY" need to replace both fuel pumps, to the tune of $12-1300. Does this sound right? I have already caught the same mechanic saying, "YES! You should have a tune up for $700." when I asked about it, only to discover that the owners manual says it doesn't need to be done until after 100,000 miles (car has less than 48,000 miles). It's already been there 2 weeks for an oil change and blend motor replacement, should I pull it out of there?
You should’ve ran away from the stealership after the $700 quote for a tuneup.
In addition to what @thumpy recommended, find an independent mechanic to carry out future repairs on your vehicle.
The fact that your vehicle needs a new sending unit at such low mileage is another story altogether..
Yea, and the guy didn’t even kiss him first before offering that tune up.
Lol
Your fuel tank only contains one sending unit. And it’s in the main pump. Now since he’s gonna be in there replacing the main the labors already paid for, so replacing the auxiliary isn’t a bad idea. But sounds like they are just tacking on as much as you can afford to me. You don’t have to pull the fuel tank on your car, it has an access panel under the rear seats. Takes about an hour to swap. And I can buy both from a mopar supplier for 250 bucks. 12-1300 is highway robbery.
Take it somewhere that isn't the dealer.
Thank you!! Was up researching all night and saw a guy on YouTube access it 5 minutes! Also realized there's a number of things that could be causing gas gauge to be off, none of which were checked first. He just said 1200-1300. and not in stock therefore a 2-week wait. I don't think it's the fuel pump anyway...car is driving fine, no misfiring, no noise, no warning lights, no coughing/sputtering, and the kicker: I forgot to mention to the dealer is that it's been about 2 years gage has been off. I fill it up whenever it hits 1/2 a tank. Will find a good mechanic and avoid this stealership from now on.
Signed,
Wasn't kissed or even flirted with! Thanks again @Thumpy!!
Keep in mind the sending unit for the gauge is built into the pump. Even though they are one unit they are functionally two separate devices. Fuel pump can function forever with the sending unit dead. But sounds like your on the right track. Good Luck.
To answer your question. Yes, you're getting screwed. I wouldn't ever go back there.
