An opinion from possibly Scotty on this purchase

Hello, I currently have an SUV gas hog and I am getting rid of it because of insane amounts of money I spend for gas even though I'm always by myself. I don't need a big car so I wanted something extremely economical.

I am going to purchase a 2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0L 3cyl engine but with a MANUAL transmission, I will not get those horrendous automatics. I know ratings are different but for the most part they average around 40 mpg. I saw one with 60k miles and asking for 6 grand for it with no problems at all.

What are you're opinions on those 3 cylinder engines with manual transmissions? I've seen some with well over 200k and they've still been running strong, but obviously with the manual ones. Do you think these are good cars? What are your opinions on that specific fiestas?

Clarification: How many years and miles are you looking to get out of it?

it won't last

What exactly would break on them? That's what I'm trying to figure out because people say that but I never understood why. The only thing I knew was their automatics were absolute junk and everyone had problems with them but obviously I would go for a manual on those

because it's cheap crappy Ford economy car with a moped size Ecoboom motor

Not a good vehicle. Look at something fuel efficient from Honda, Toyota, and newer Mazdas.

I know this sounds crazy but I actually look for the smallest engine with the smallest vehicle, just a preference. I'm not a fan of neither Toyota or Hondas and I would consider Mazda but just seeing what else is out there, as far as engines and car sizes I liked the 3 cylinder 1.0, especially since they're easier to work on yourself than a bigger engine

Not good for the long haul. Build quality is sub-par.

What exactly is so bad on them? The only thing I understood that was wrong with them was their transmissions but that is why I avoid the automatics. Is there any other major problems they face?

Don’t do it!

You’re better off buying an additional beater $800 Kia instead -

If it is an Ecoboost 3 cylinder, definitely stay away. Scotty is not too fond of Ecoboost engines.

If it is naturally aspirated, maybe.

The only one I would possibly consider are the counterparts in engine and transmission to the second generation  Mazda2 of the same generation Fiesta as they share the same platform.

Preferably, I’d get the third generation Mazda2 as it has less in common with Ford, and when Mazda became their own again.

If you must have one of those you'd be much better off with a non-turbocharged 4-cylinder model. A friend bought a new one like that in 2015 (with manual transmission) and really has not had any problems with it. Those 3-cylinder Ecoboost engines are lightly-built, fragile beasts that won't last.

Thank you for the info, I didn't know that specifically those 3 cylinders were built that weak

Ford Fiesta is a meh car overall. Fun cars? Yes fs if you get a manual that is smart you're looking at one with a manual since the automatics were trash. However, the engines are relatively weak and a 1.0 3 cylinder engine with a turbo is not gonna hold up. I would pass and look at Honda Fit with a stick as a better alternative and maybe a Versa (personally not a fan of them, but they are fine with the manual).

Thank you, I'll consider just getting a non turbo with manual since I've noticed that many say the 1.0 are non lasting engines
