Are Jeep Grand Cherokees reliable?

Topic starter

My parents had a 98 grand Cherokee and it was amazing I fell in love with it but by that time I wasn’t able to drive since I was young but now that I’m able to drive and purchase a car I was trying to find and old jeep but they’re overall expensive in my area but I started looking at the dealerships and there was a lot of 2010-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees and a 2011 with 84k miles caught my eye since it said it had a 5.7 hemi and I just wanted to get it that instance but i wasn’t sure how those came out. Any opinions or recommendations since I do want a jeep especially since I’m going to go to college but I’m a little scared since it’s going to be my second purchase. Thank you

I would not get one of those vehicles, esp. higher mileage and out of warranty as they can become money pits over time.  Also see below:

DayWalker is right - per CarComplaints, 2011 is probably the least reliable year (not that other years are that good).

My first car was 2000 jeep cherokee. My father give it to me for high school. We still have it and we took care of it. We never drove it off road. The cherokee had 550000miles on and is now driven by my sister it is her first car . To honest any jeep that was made before 2005 were reliable and had solid build.

Now a days new jeep are made by fiat chrysler which are totally unreliable and they break down before reaching 100000 miles.

Reason to many electronics component

Lower end jeep have poor frame

Srt are the worst

Since you mentioned it was 98 grand cherokee it is a good reliable car

But if you wanna take my honest opinion get toyota 4runner instead those are more reliable then jeep now a days

And for God SAKE DONT BUY LAND ROVER

I know your a student and I been in your shose and last thing I want is my car breaking down during exam or project days
So can you tell me ur minimum and maximum price range ?
It's gonna be helpful for finding you a reliable car for college

The ones you consider are not reliable. What are your other options?

The modern ones are not built like the old ones. I would pass, and I like the design of the current Grand Cherokee. I actually like the design of a lot of Chrysler's stuff. But they fall apart on days that end in "y" so I would never own one.

I would recommend that you run away fast. Those Jeeps are a bankruptcy starter pack.

Back then they were well made. Then they became piles of junk.

Here is the owner complaint data.

Yes and no.

my wife has a 13 JGC with the hemi V8. The motor and transmission and the mechanicals in general have been fine. But the electronics are a different story. Seems like she’s always fixing a relay or something, and that car eats lightbulbs (turn signals, running lights) like they’re going out of style.  Fortunately we got a lifetime warranty, so as long as we own it the dealer will fix everything with a nominal service fee.

i gotta say, it’s a nice riding and driving car, and it has lots of power. If the one you are looking at is just a base model with minimal options (ie, unnecessary electronics) or if you are skilled in doing electrical work, it might not be a bad option. But be aware that things will go bad frequently on that car.

Any Jeep GC newer than about 2007 is not even worth considering.  From what I've seen, the 2011 Jeep GC is a pretty terrible vehicle in general.  The HEMI is probably the best motor available in the WK2s, but beware even of the HEMI.  They started using a plastic oil pan in the HEMI in that lineup and I've seen significant oil leaks from these pans with less than 100k miles on the engine - no kidding!

In short, I would not recommend the vehicle.

Here are some reliable cars like jeep which you can get under 10k

Ford explorer

Hundayi Sanata

Toyota highlander

Toyota Venza

Acura rdx

Toyota rav4

Lexus rx

Honda cr v

These cars reliable, fast and have plenty of room

Make sure before you buy any used cars look for reliable mechanic and ask him if he can inspect the car and take it for test drive before handing over cash.

And dont trust the dealership as they will sell u stuff even if the car has major issues just to make money. Dealership mechanic are bunch of idiots. Look up car fax and ask for car vin to get an idea of car you are plainning to buy and have knowledge about the car that how many times car have maintained or was in accident or had major replacement
