Hi scotty, I recently did a dump and fill on my 2017 Mazda 3 auto transmission I have done it once before however this time I noticed the oil coming out had a greenish look to it, my worry is that some of my coolant is somehow mixed with the atf fluid. in my Mazda the coolant is green and new atf fluid blue. I have sent away for a oil test kit but it could be a few weeks. was wondering if there was a easy way to confirm that it is indeed coolant or the normal look of used oil I have still been driving it, it is my only way too and from work. is there any harm in driving it a few weeks till I get results from the oil test? I did a obd2 scan on bluedriver and no codes came up
thanks for your time, Robert
If coolant is getting into the trans fluid it will destroy the transmission in short order. Is your transmission cooler integral with the radiator? (There would be fluid lines from the transmission going into one of the radiator tanks.) If so there may be a leak between the cooler and the radiator. On the other hand, if the trans cooler is separate from the radiator there really would be no path for coolant to get into the transmission fluid.
it is my understanding that the tans uses the same radiator as the engine, I suppose it is possible for the radiator to have failed but it is only 4 years old
It seems unlikely that a you'd have that kind of failure after 4 years in a Mazda. (On a GM or Fiat/Chrysler product it would be expected.) Still it's possible and radiators are a heck of a lot less expensive than transmissions. Is the coolant level dropping?
no I did look at it with a flashlight and it still looked very green and full I would think that if coolant got into the trans then surely trans fluid would also be in the coolant but I see no evidence of that, I may do a coolant change just to be sure
Edit: it also may be possible the atf is below the coolant so it may be imposable to see from above
