Automatic transmission fluid change -- high mileage Subaru Forester

Hello -- is it safe to do a drain and fill cycle on my 170k Subaru Forester? I bought it used and it's not clear to me if the fluid has ever been changed. I understand that a flush is probably not a good idea, but what about a drain and fill?

Thank you!

What year? Assuming it's an automatic, is it a CVT or conventional transmission?

2003 - conventional

What is the condition of the fluid? If burnt and gritty you probably don't want to risk changing it. That suspended grit is friction surface material worn off of the bands and clutches, and on a worn transmission it can be the only thing letting it operate. On the other hand if the fluid is just dark but otherwise clean it should be safe to do a drain and fill.
