How Scotty I just recently got a 2012 Toyota Camry from my mother as a gift. It's got only about 14,800 miles on it. The engine still runs good, and there are no leaks. Recently the automatic transmission shifts from 1 to 2, then back to 1, to 2 gears on low speeds (0-25 mph) when I accelerate. When I start to criuse at highway speeds 50 - 70 mph, it doesn't do that. At highway speeds it works good. What could be the cause at low speeds.
check the transmission fluid
Where is the dipstick for automatic transmission for that model?
"The trans does not have a dipstick. The trans has a side filler plug. Fluid is installed until it runs out the filler hole. Toyota requires the trans be operated first to heat the fluid up to a certain temp before checking."
Well that's gotta be one of the stupidest things Toyota has ever done. I guess it means that if you want to see if the fluid is full, you have to pour fluid into it using a this complicated procedure (which nobody will do). I hope there is still a drain plug so you can take a fluid sample for inspection.
Shameful. Sorry, I guess my only advice is to take it to a transmission shop
It really is idiotic and all the manufacturers have been doing it in recent years. It goes from idiotic to potentially tragic when the cars get old. A minor fluid leak that needs occasional topping up is easy peasy with a dipstick, and will probably lead to transmission failure without one since it's such a pain to check or add fluid.
YEP on Toyota transmissions there is no reason not to have a dipstick except for sheer stupidity, he'll just have to replace the fluid and see how it affects the driving.
I assume that's water Ingress or something like that..
Do you mean 148,000 miles, instead of 14,800 miles?
14,800 miles. Where can I find the dipstick for automatic transmission?
There is no dipstick on this model. There is a side plug on the trans for checking the fluid level when the trans is warmed up.
whoever made that decision should be publicly flogged.
At the very least!
Yeah a very stupid idea. Thanks for all your helps.
Had a similar issue. Turned out the little pcb in the shifter went bad. Replaced shifter, problem solved
What is a "pcb?"
@doc Printed Circuit Board. C'mon man you can google it 🙂
Thanks for the enlightenment, Joe.
