I bought a 2008 Toyota rav4 2.4L with 160k miles. Got around the corner from my home and the check engine light came on with code p0420. I'm wondering if it is worth replacing the catalytic converter on this vehicle or should I junk it. I believe the seller turned the light off and hid the problem from me. Now it's my problem to deal with. I replaced the 02 sensor and it started throwing codes related to 02 sensor problems. When I put the original sensor back in it, I began to get the p0420 code again. What should I do?
@tweety
Ravs are pretty hardy vehicles. My sister in law accidentally hit a deer with hers 5 years ago in the mountains of VA and the vehicle just keeps going. If the rest of the vehicle is ok, I would try and find someone near you who works on toyotas to confirm that the cat is bad and needs to be replaced.
I don't know if there is a way to test it to make sure. As soon as I tell a mechanic the code they immediately say it's the cat. They don't even really look at anything on the vehicle. Quote I got was 2k to replace.
Cats are kinda expensive, but they're not that hard to replace. Just hope and pray that's the only issue.
@zacknac
That's my exact concern. What else could be wrong. I was told it could be done for 2k. Is it worth it at that price?
Zac is right. Not hard to change it sucks they tried to hustle you. Might want to see if you could get a used one out of a yard with less miles.. Might be cheaper than new. Just check it to be certain it’s a OEM Cat. Aftermarket ones some times don’t have the correct chemical properties and you might be right back where you are. Good luck.
Scotty mentioned that you might clean the catalytic convertor and/or use a better gasoline (maybe the highest octane from shell).
Is the car running bad over all ? or you just get that trouble code? Any oil consumption?
Rav 4 are known for that particular trouble code. Maybe you don't need a cat replacement.
I would try with a oxygen sensor extender - spacer or also so called "Spark Plug Non-Foulers"
Install one or even 2 of those spacers, clean the trouble codes and take it for a longer spin.
@mascot15
It doesn't seem to run bad. Just can't get an inspection sticker with that light on.
Scotty Talks about how to fix Catalytic, you might be able to repurpose the unit onto a different exhaust pipe. scotty's cat video
@hellocivicbyecavalier
I will look for that video. Thanks
