2011 BMW X3 XDrive35i, 85K miles. Does it make any sense to do some proactive maintenance, e.g. change the transmission filter, valve cover gaskets, etc. We really like the car and would like to keep it a long time.
Well I would do the best I could to take care of it baby it because 10 years or 100k miles is generally when they become absolute money pits especially in the engine with all the cheaply made plastic parts.
Well, … 85K miles is just about the time these X3s are starting to cause real headaches. Bits and pieces start to crack, sensors and switches start to quit functioning, … one after the other to no end. If you are knowledgeable and DIY handy type, you probably can tolerate this for a while, … another 25-35K, perhaps?Otherwise, you better befriend a good BMW mechanic close by, … since your Beemer will be spending quite a bit of time over there!
And after about 125K, … problems will start to become really, really serious, …

Summary: If you are not mechanically inclined, this is the perfect time to sell it.
