BMW Steptronic Transmission

I own a 2007 328i Coupe e92 130k miles and the steptronic transmission from time to time goes in to limp mode.

BMW dealer would never drain, change fluid and filter. They said it’s “lifetime.”

Now that the transmission is not functioning as intended BMW dealer would like to replace the transmission at a cost of $6,500 (more than the car is worth)

My car, other than the transmission, runs beautifully and I would like to keep it working.

I believe the transmission can be repaired with new solenoids, sleeves by a qualified pro.

Can someone offer some guidance and point me in the right direction or should I just give this car away?

thank you

Unfortunately that's the deal with "lifetime" transmission fluid. The only "lifetime" the manufacturer and dealer are concerned about is the warranty. After that they couldn't care less.

It's not anything new either. I still have the owner's manual for a 1972 AMC Hornet from nearly 50 years ago and it states that the automatic transmission fluid does not have to ever be changed.

No one works on those cars cheaply there are royal pain to work on and only an expert BMW mechanic will even have the equipment to actually work on it but if you can find one that perhaps works on weekends for cash it might be worth having them check it out at least
