Bottom engine noise

Hey Scotty I have a 1995 Toyota celica 2.2l, I just rebuilt the engine. The engine is still on the stand. when I turn the crank by hand I hear a hissing noise coming from the bottom end. There is a little bit of oil in the cylinder not sure if that would have any thing to do with it.??

Sounds like the rings dragging in the cylinder, or the crank/push rods dragging on the bearing. You have to be careful when you do rebuilds, because you can get different thicknesses of bearings, piston rings to. Did a machine shop do you crank and block or did you just polish the crank and hone the cylinders yourself? You may have to measure it or use plastiguage on the bearings. Also you can disconnect the push rods one at a time until the noise disappears, see if it is a cylinder.

I measured the bearings with plastigauge everything was in spec. I measured the ring gap and everything was in spec there to. I did hone the cylinders but not aggressively. It’s sounds like air is going past the ring on the compression stage.

I was talking about ring thickness not gap. Do you have the heads on with plugs in? Again disconnecting one rod at a time will help you figure out which cylinder it is.

Ohhh my bad and yes the head is on, the plugs are out. I put my hand over all the spark plug whole the hissing noise is coming from all. I’m trying to avoid disconnecting if can.

You just moving air. Put plugs in and rotate it. You shouldn’t hear it anymore then. If you do then you’re gonna have to disconnect one at a time see which set rings is having an issue.

It’s still doing it! Is it possible that it could be doing that cause there I little bit of oil in the cylinders?

If you have plugs in then what you’re hearing is more than likely compression leaking down past the rings, or through a valve that’s not closing all the way. If your gaps are all lined up on the rings that could cause it to. It’s hard to do a compression test turning it by hand, but not to bad if the other cylinders have the plugs out. Use a gauge turn it through the compression cycle once and see if it holds or leaks down. Could be slightly out of time to, leaking down through a valve that way

Its gonna leak down some. Just do a leak down test see if it’s in spec. If you can hear it then likely it isn’t.

Yeah I still hear the noise. I read Some other forums that it’s normal for new rings and that they need to be broken in but don’t know how true that it’s.

So I’m gonna have to disassemble it right ?

Do a leak down test. If it’s in spec your fine.
