I have a 2017 Toyota Corolla LE with an overflow transmission. I recently had my 45,000 mile scheduled maintenance and agreed to the service manager's suggestion to have the rear break pads cleaned of dust. I figure it was about $50 in labor. Was it money well spent? I live on a dirt road, 1.5 miles long and travel it twice a day, so I'm sure I get dust on the brakes. But cleaning them seems like it won't make much difference because they will get dusted again so soon because of where I live.
can I interest you in a tail pipe cleaning service?
Sounds like they sold you a little bit of nonsense. Brakes are made to tolerate dirt, dust, etc. They're outside and they get wet, splashed with dirty road water, etc. Most of their moving parts are covered with rubber boots to keep dirt and dust out of them, as well. The rotors also wipe the pads as they spin in between the calipers when you're slowing down, kinda like how surface rust gets rubbed off after the car sat overnight in a humid environment and you first stop. If you're concerned, you can do it yourself by spraying brake cleaner in there. I wouldn't pay someone to do that.
