I took my 2 1/2 year old Camry to the Toyota dealer for it's 18000 mile checkup. The dealer recommended I have the brake fluid changed. I never heard of this before. I never changed brake fluid in the past unless there was a problem. Is this really necessary or are they just trying to hose me ?
This is a typical dealer rip off. Never get your car worked on by a dealer unless you have to because of a warranty situation. Even then, I would get it checked by a competent, independent mechanic.
It's a good idea to replace brake fluid every few years or so because it absorbs moisture. So it's a bit early for you but when you get the job done go to a good independent mechanic, don't pay dealer ripoff prices. (Brake fluid can be tested for moisture content so you know for certain whether it needs to be done or not.)
