Brake Headaches and Avoiding Ripoffs

My 2006 Chevy Suburban 1500 z71 5.3 L  is apparently in need of new calipers and according to a newer tire shop called Mavis, which is fairly new in Lecanto FL, it will need new rotors and brake pads also. They refused to provide me with a written estimate. Said it was "company policy". They also informed me that the brakes could fail and it could be dangerous if the caliper pin falls out.  Is this true or are they trying to scare me into  a sale?

just keep looking. Don't even waste your time. And don't go to chain shops.

probably

What causes calipers to fail? ? I assume these are the original calipers on my 06 Suburban with 230K however the brake pads and rotors were replaced in 2021 and no indication of caliper issues that were apparent at that time and not lots of heavy driving since then. What else could be causing a grinding noise (like gravel) in the rear ?

Unfortunately, the only options are chain shops in my area, I need a private mechanic! Lol

Totally normal thing. Just age and wear and tear. The rubber piston seals harden. Slide pins wear out or rust.
You didn't give your miles as instructed, but 18 years is a lot for calipers. Usually shows up as uneven wear on the pads/rotors, or worse seized brakes. Grinding noise can be several things. Usually worn rotors or bad bearings. Those rubber brake hoses are going to be in pretty rough shape too. Especially if you don't change the brake fluid. Anyway, you need a competent, trustworthy mechanic.

If you know of any "trustworthy" mechanics PLEASE send them my way! Thank you for your response. Happy New Year.

Everything wears out and that thing is 18 years old. How long did you expect them to last? The seals probably gave out and/or the calipers rusted internally from the fluid absorbing moisture.

I should know that. Lol . Thank you!
