Hello Scotty/all. I have a 2006 Ford Escape AWD, 3.0L V6 with the automatic CD4E transmission. The car has 99,800 miles on it. I bought it used from a private seller for $3,000. (Not sure if it matters but the car was actually built in 2005 for the 2006 model year.)
First thing I did when I got the car was a full fluids change. I put in Traveller multi-purpose conventional ATF & AT-205 Reseal. A week later (without even driving) the transmission started leaking from in between the trans and PTO unit. It was coming out at about 1 drop per second. I replaced the seal between PTO & transmission and filled with MERCON V synthetic ATF and more AT-205, no leaks. I parked it for a week and a half without driving it and it started leaking again! Basically the same as the first time, 1 drop per second. Thinking the thinner synthetic oil could be the problem (was really grasping at straws) I drained it out and refilled with non synthetic but it still continued to leak. It seemed to stop leaking after I let it run for a bit then starts again once it cools off. (Maybe the rubber got warm & expanded?) The rate of the leak is now about 1 drop every 10 seconds. Any advice would really be appreciated. What’s happening doesn’t make sense to me.
thanks!

There may be a problem with the shaft the seal is riding on. If not completely smooth you're going to have a leak.
The seal actually rides on a fixed piece of the PTO unit that fits into the transmission. I inspected the smooth metal that goes into the seal before putting it back together and didn’t notice any scratches or scuffs.

I'm just shocked that Escapes have a PTO option. Are people plowing or running farm equipment with their SUVs? 😆
