Bubbly Oil in 2001 Volvo S80

Hi Scotty. I have a 2001 Volvo S80 T6 (2.8L twin turbo engine) and when I take the dipstick out of the engine oil it has bubbles in it. I took it to a shop that said there is no coolant in the oil and that the bubbles are normal for this engine. What do you think? Are they right?

Have you done any work to your car involving the oil system, like the oil cooler hoses? if not, then it might be the oil pickup o-rings at the bottom of the sump/pan need to be replaced soon.

To my knowledge there has not been any work done on the oil system, however I got it used at 140 thousand miles so there’s no way to know for sure. From what I can tell the oil cooler is located near the front passenger fender so I will Jack it up and report back. Thanks!

A small amount of coolant in the oil might not be obvious in a visual check. To be sure of what's going on you need to send a sample out to Blackstone Labs or similar place for analysis.

Oil analysis is a good idea, Chuck. I’m afraid at that age, the engine may be near end-of-life. Analysis might be a quick and easy way to tell if there is a major problems or not

I just requested one of their free sample kits so hopefully it gets here soon. I will say it definitely does not burn coolant because I did a block leak test and also there is no white smoke out the exhaust except for what’s normal here in the Michigan winters.

I would drain it out and look at it
