Hi everyone,

I'm looking for used trucks to buy, I'm mainly looking at used Tacoma's and was wondering what age range should I be look at. As a college student I don't really have a big budge to spend, so I was mainly looking at like 20 year old cars that have a good amount of miles. Any advice is appreciated.

Do you need a truck to go back and forth to college?

well I live on campus, but I need the space as I have to carry all my belongings between school and home once we go on breaks.

Yeah, consider the recommendation from @mmj

Tacomas are generally pretty good.  You can look at carcomplaints.com to see what the main issues are with any given year.  Only thing is that everybody knows Tacomas are good, so they are willing to pay up for even an older one.  So you won't likely find a good deal.

Less expensive options if you don't plan to put on a lot of miles would include an older Ranger, S-10, or Silverado (1990's body style).  The key to all those is being able to do basic service and repairs yourself.  They will have problems, but parts are generally cheap and widely available, so if you can fix things yourself, they can be a viable option.  Plan on investing in a Haynes shop manual.

Also, when people are on a limited budget, they often get anxious and jump on the first appealing rig that they can afford, then find out that it needs a lot of expensive repairs.  Don't do that.  Take your time, and plan on spending a couple hundred dollars on a pre-purchase inspection (either from a local mechanic or Lemon Squad); the money you spend could end up saving you many times that.

Good luck

You will save more money looking for a sedan.  Look at a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.

How about a minivan? Your stuff might get stolen or rained on in a pickup.
