[Solved] Buying a car sitting on lot for a long duration.

Hi Scotty,  I'm looking at a 2011 Toyota Venza AWD 6Cyl that has been sitting on a used auto lot for a year and a half. It has about 200,000 kms on it. I would definitely get it looked at by my mechanic if I was going to pull the trigger.  What should I look at to get it checked out properly and is there a chance that permanent damage was done to the car by it sitting so long? The dealer wants $10,000 Canadian for it. thanks

PS.  Saw your show on Lewiston and your dad's station. I live in St. Catharines Ont. and go quite often to concerts at Lewiston Art Park.  Quite a thrill to know that you got your start there!  Cheers!

The way I look at it, is it's been there for that long for a reason and nobody's pulled the trigger on it, red flag in my book. Might look ok at face value, but I'd pass and keep looking. Too much $$ for too much unknown.

Thanks!

Check all fluids & replace as necessary.

Also check all rubber parts as they may have worn depending on how the vehicle was stored. You’ll most probably need 4 new tyres as the old ones may have irreparable flat spots/gone out of round.

Check underneath for rust.

All in all, I’d pass for $10,000. It’s got too many miles to command a premium & theres no telling what may need replacing given that its sat for 18 months (presuming never been started either).

Find another example which has been used regularly.

thanks

I personally avoid getting cars that have been sitting for so long - especially if it’s a Toyota.  Why would it be sitting for that long?  It makes me very suspicious.  As for what to look for, this is good knowledge to have anyways, see below:

thanks for the info
