Buying a new car.

Hello Scotty

How are you?
I'm from Portugal and I've been waching your videos for a while.

I own a 20 year Peugeot 206 with more 313000Km and I want to change my car because is getting to much problems and expensive to repair, because its a Diesel.

I think I would prefer to have a petrol or hybrid now.

So I know that you are a fan of Toyota or Honda and those two are expensive comparing to the french brands.

So my question is:
Is better to buy an 6 year old Auris or Jazz (with more than 80000 or 100000 miles), than a new 2020 Renault Clio or Dacia Sandero for the same price of 12.000€ (14.200$)

There are studies that shows Renault, Dacia Skoda and Hyundai are quite reliable. (Should I trust in it?)

I dont like Toyota Yaris because is too small. I want car similar or bigger than 4040mm (milimeters)

There are any other brands or models that you recommend and should I take a look too?

Thank you for the public service that you do here helping other people solving theirs problems.
Great job men!!!

Thanks for your time

Best regards

Jorge

Hi!
Thank you for your response.

Any other brands should I look for? Korean are good? Seat Ibiza (from the same group of Skoda)?

Thank you!

Hy there!

As I'm familiar, Škoda and Seat are not anymore what they used to in terms of reliability, unfortunately. And I used to like Škoda. Probably VW intetnitonally kills them.

If you want a car for a long period, stay away from years when new generations came out. Better wait a few years that 'serial issues' are resolved.

Current Clios came out in 2019. And don't expect reliability from Dacia on a long run since it is owned by Renault. Current  generation of Sandero was released in 2012.

The generation of Honda Jazz, you are looking at, was being made between 2007 in 2014. I think that would not be a bad pick.

2nd generation of Toyota Auris came out in 2013 and ended in 2018.

6 years old Auris with over 80k miles for 12000€? You probably mean a hybrid one. If you want a hybrid for longer period, get a new one. Not cheap when new, not cheap older when battery starts to go out at about 150k miles.

And let me express my experience.

For 12500€ I bought 2 years old Auris with 16000 km this year.

Good luck!

@g-t
Thank you for your responce.
Well here in Portugal it seems to be more expensive than on the others countries...
Because the 2018 Auris cost 15500€.

Auris - 2014 more than 120000km
https://www.standvirtual.com/carros/toyota/auris/desde-2014/?search%5Border%5D=filter_float_price%3Aasc&search%5Bbrand_program_id%5D%5B0%5D=&search%5Bcountry%5D=

Clio - 2018 - less than 47000km
https://www.standvirtual.com/carros/renault/clio/desde-2018/?search%5Bfilter_enum_damaged%5D=0&search%5Border%5D=filter_float_price%3Aasc&search%5Bbrand_program_id%5D%5B0%5D=&search%5Bcountry%5D=

Jazz - 2014 -

As you can see even a older jazz or auris is more expensive than a 2018 clio
If I had enough money I have no dubt in buying a Auris or a Jazz.

About the reliability dont want to believe that VW group wanted to destroy the good reputation on Skoda, the same thing betwen Renault and Dacia.
Because they wont win anything.
They should apply and add the reliability of the others on their own cars, for the benefit of the company.

Cheers
Jorge

Yeah, cars go for more there. Perhaps because they are better quality for West Europe.
It also depends what engine you look at.
Auris with 1.2 turbo charged engine goes for a lot more than one with 1.3L normally aspirated engine.

@g-t
Auris seems to be an excelent car I already eard wonders about the 1.2 is the best out there. I would love to have an Auris, one day.
But for the moment, hum... dont know yet because to me it seems to be a bit longer car in terms of dimensions. I'm used to drive cars in the segment below.
It seems to be less agile than a Seat Leon or Ibiza.
I still prefere comfort and relaxing driving than a good performance car.
But in some situations a smaller car is better to maneuver. But dont like cars too small, like Yaris.

Do you think Auris caravan (station wagon for Americans)? Hatchback is as big like VW Golf or Seat Ibiza. 1.3 liter is lazy in terms of acceleration but handles good on road.
Even for me is Yaris not spacious enough. I think Fiat Uno that is smaller, is more spacious. Yaris is inside somehow like Citroen Saxo which is smaller.
If you want more comfort, why don't you take a look at Honda Accord?

@g-t
Yeah I think the same Yaris is very small.
Well the Accord is very big
Here where I live in a Island we have some twisty roads, uphill to see some mountains and lakes, narrow streets in cities and some bad roads too. Cars like Accord is only for rich people. Not affordable for me lol

1. Young people here loves Fiesta, Ibiza, Clio, C3, etc...
2. Middle class loves, Golf, Auris, Focus, Civic...
3. Higher prefer, 1Series, A-class, V40, Mazda 3...

I'm between 1. and 2. But I know that I must do test drive to know how and which car handles better with me.
To start maybe must choose cars on the point 1. are more affordable and cheap to run.
Maybe Kia Rio or Hyundai i20 are comfortable and reliable too
