Buying Used Car Direct From Hertz Rentals

Hi Scotty,

I've been scouring the internet earth for the past 2 months looking for either a 'previously enjoyed' 2022 Toyota Rav4 XSE or Limited (non PHEV) or a 2022 Venza Limited.  Today when I booted up my search engine, CarGurus listed a bunch of used cars from Hertz's rental fleets direct to consumer sales sites.  They have several hubs across the country.  I had never come across Hertz selling direct before.  What are your thoughts on buying a used rental car and buying directly from Hertz.  They claim they cut out the middleman, no haggling and they have 3 day return policy.  You can also rent to own for 3 days.  If you decide to buy, they apply the rental fee; if you don't, they charge you.  Not sure exactly what the rental fee would be.   Interesting/ idea or will I lose my tiny mind in the process?

Thanks!

just some humor. It might be ok depending on price, but definitely have it inspected first. I would be very suspicious why they're getting rid of only 1 year old cars already, in a time when cars are hard to get.

It was funny, I got a laugh. This is a huge event for me bc I have a 2009 Toyota Highlander AWD V-6 Limited and that morsel of a car has been frickin' awesome. At the time it was considered loaded: back-up camera, heated seats, sunroof, DVD player in the 2nd row, automatic tailgate. Has nvr once had engine/trammy trouble, nvr left me in a lurch, always started even in 10 degree weather. But she's getting tired with the 273K miles on her. That car does not owe me anything.

I'd be wary of buying a rent-a-car, they usually get abused before they move on.

Case in point, on my recent family trip to California, we rented a brand new Toyota Highlander. Two days in, my dad, who was the designated driver, slightly damaged the front passenger-side wheel by curbing it looking for parking. Now imagine someone like that driving that car every day for the next few years or so.

curb rash? I would be ok with that.

It's just an example, but the point is, rentals get beat to hell.

Why buy a year old model used and from a car rental company?! Just buy a brand new 2023; you own it from day one and can take care of it properly and in this used market buying new makes much more sense than a used last year model.

Everything is topsy-turvy. I looked at a 2020 car about 6 weeks ago with 32K miles on it & they were asking $1,500 over original MSRP. No way. IK it probably makes sense to buy new in this market but Toyota has such few cars on the lot and the extended wait times for delivery are crazy.

You can still find brand new Toyota for msrp which is totally normal in this market. And yes used cars are expensive now because there are people who can't wait for a brand new car. So yeah just find a dealership selling at msrp, put down a deposit, and wait for the car to arrive.

I wonder if these are included in the sale: https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1135820_hertz-rent-a-racer-program-returns-with-900-plus-hp-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-h
