2015 Toyota Camry Transmission Shudder

Hi Scotty

I purchased my 2015 Camry 4 cylinder XLE at 41000km

No issues until 181,000 km when it would shudder between 30-80 km/hr.

Toyota dealership diagnostic advised to replace the transmission for 8k or install a used unit for 4k

Took it to a transmission repair shop and they rebuit it for much less . New TC  , pump , valve body etc ...

Had to to take it back 5 yes 5 times as the problem kept coming back .

Finally they opened up the tranny again and replace the TC they installed.

It drove ok for a month and they shudder is back but not as severe .

Love the car and it's in great condition otherwise

What could this problem be ? Do I sell it . Is it a Toyota lemon ? Hard to believe the Camry had this issue .

Hope you can help with some advice

Thank you

It looks like this is a known problem in some Camry models and Toyota has had service campaigns related to it. (Most sources say that 2012-2014 are the model years affected but it's conceivable that a 2015 Camry would also exhibit the problem, especially if it was built in calendar year 2014.) On the face of it, It also appears that the shop did a lousy job rebuilding your transmission. That's really best done in a factory due to the complexity of modern transmissions. Few local shops would be able to do it properly.

Yes I believe the shop did a lousy job unfortunately . I gave them the benefit of the doubt and did what I could to have them fix it but they kept saying it's a Toyota issue and they did all they could . Will take it in the spring to another shop and hope that solves it . Currently has 212,000 km so thinking it's worth spending a bit more on it as opposed to buying something else new or used .

If you decided to do the rebuild, Toyota has a kit (torque converter kit) that actually cost less money than the torque converter itself. It has all the parts need to be replaced. If I were you, I would find an honest mechanic who works on transmissions to find out what the exact issue is and if it turned out to be the torque converter, I would get the kit from a Toyota delaer and install it.

Thank you

No its not a CVT. In hindsight I should have gone for one with that transmission.

Thanks

You are referring to the hybrid Camry.  Also, the V6 engine with the 6-speed automatic transmission didn’t seem to suffer as much from the transmission shudder issue as the Inline-4 engine, so maybe it would have been better to get that.  Hindsight is 20/20.

So the V6 has a different tranny from the I4 version. Yes, both are 6AT.
V6 uses the U660E.
I4 uses the U760E.

That Camry has a CVT tranny. Did you buy the car new or used. Did you ever change the tranny fluid? I have a 2018 corolla, and a 2005 accord I have more faith in the accord than the corolla. Accord has 228,000 miles proven performance. Time will tell for the corolla because it has a CVT tranny also. Where as the accord does not. I will be changing the corolla tranny fluid soon. It has 50,000 miles now.

6 speed unless hybrid

That Camry has 6AT. 2018+ has 8AT. Unless it's Hybrid. Even the Hybrid eCVT is different than your 2018 Corolla CVT. The eCVT has proven decades of reliability.
