Should I use additives to help oil burning and bad gas mileage?

Dear Scotty,

I have a 2005 Honda CR-V EX AWD automatic transmission with 206000 miles on it that's consuming a quart of oil every 600 miles and is producing smoke. Its fuel consumption is also poor, at roughly 15 MPG in the city and 17 MPG on the highway. For additional context, I've already replaced the PCV valve and the air filter, and the original catalytic converter was stolen and has since been replaced with an aftermarket unit.

I'm considering using two specific additives:

  • Engine oil additive: Lucas Low Viscosity Oil Stabilizer
  • Fuel additive: Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus

My main question is: Are these additives safe and effective for my car to potentially reduce oil consumption, improve engine performance, and enhance fuel efficiency, especially considering the aftermarket catalytic converter? I'd appreciate your expert opinion.

Thanks,

Have you considered that after 20 years and over 200K miles your engine may be simply worn out?

Engine oil additive: Lucas Low Viscosity Oil Stabilizer

As with most additives, this is snake oil whose major effect is lightening your wallet.

Fuel additive: Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus

Might help a bit if your fuel injectors are clogged.

No, other than the Techron possibly helping with clogged injectors. It is unrealistic to expect much out of "mechanic in a can/bottle" type products.

Have you performed a diagnostic scan for codes and live data to look for issues?

Scotty has recommended the ATS Carbon Clean engine and fuel cleaning products. If your car problems are due to carbon buildup and clogged injectors rather than excessive wear they may help.

No, not effective. Your piston rings are likely worn and there's no economical fix for that. You could try a oil system cleaner in case that frees up any gummed up parts, but I wouldn't expect any miracles at 200k.

@imperator, thanks for the reply. I would like to know the oil system cleaner that you recommended, is it the one you pour in the gas tank similar to(Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus) or the one you pour in the engine similar to(Lucas Low Viscosity Oil Stabilizer)?

Like I said .... oil system, not fuel system.

Lucas Low Viscosity Oil Stabilizer
no. Cleaner, not stabilizer. Scotty recommends that ATS Chemical 505CRO Oil System Treatment stuff. But there are others.
