Car Fires or Smores on the interstate

Hi Scotti

This is just a general question. I noticed that there are a bunch of cars that are being recalled because of engine fires. In most cases it seems the fires are caused by oil leaking onto the exhaust system. I have had numerous cars with leaking valve covers over the years. Rarely did it result in fire. You just live with the smell of burnt oil until the nagging gets to you and you break down and change the gasket. Are the new synthetic oils more flamable. Are the exhaust systems hotter?

And of coarse my wife never nags. {black}

It all depends on how much oil leak you have. If it is just a sip which stays close to the headgasket, you won't have issues but the smell.

I don’t think engine oil leaks cause many fires. It’s mostly overheating engines. Then electrical faults. And sometimes, like the kias, it’s the hydraulics.

but I rarely see car fires around here. Once every 8 years or something.
