Hi

I have a 1966 Ford Mustang 289 and I'd like to adjust the carburetor but I don't find the adjustment screws or even a name on it.

How do I upload pictures here?

Is it the original Ford Autolite/Motorcraft type of carb? Four barrel or two barrel? (If it's the Ford 2-barrel carb I have the same one on my '71 Ambassador.)

@chucktobias Mine is the 2100


@bob81 That was probably the most common for the 289 at the time, and as I said I have the same carburetor on one of my own cars. It's a pretty simple and straightforward carb to deal with. The mixture screws are on the front of the carb under the float bowl. The video in the link below shows in detail all the adjustments, with mixture screws towards the end at about 19:44.

@chucktobias I'm doing the fast idler adjustment
I turned the choke completely to the left, adjusted the gap correctly. The manual says that I should turn it to the right on 2 rich but my choir doesn't have any index mark. How will I guess it?


@bob81 If there is no index mark I would start by adjusting the choke so it is just barely closed with the engine cold. Mark that position and make adjustments as needed from that point.


@chucktobias This is what I did and it runs way too rich. But I also have to reset the idling mixture. What should I do?


@bob81 Is the choke opening? If not you have a problem with the choke itself. If the engine is running too rich with the choke open you have other problems in which case it's time to tear into the carb and check things like needle valve, float level, leaky power valve, etc.


@chucktobias Yes, the choke is opening slowly but as my car is sitting in my garage, I turn the engine off to avoid to be intoxicated.


@bob81 Open the garage door so you're not asphyxiated while the engine is running! If the choke opens all the way as the the engine reaches operating temperature it is working reasonably well, though likely to need fine-tuning. If the choke is not opening then that would need to be addressed. It's very common for the heat tube going into the choke to be clogged or rusted out. As I said if the choke is working and you're still running too rich that carb has internal problems. (Also possible that fuel pressure could be too high but that's rare with old-school mechanical pumps.)
