Hi Scotty, I got a new 2020 Ford Explorer st. I was wondering is it worth it to add a catch cans in the system. Does it make any different in performance? thanks
Hello there! Catch cans do not affect the performance of the engine. They are used to catch oil droplets from the positive crankcase ventilation tube connected to the air intake pipe to prevent it from getting into the combustion chambers. Oil buildup inside the intake manifold leads to carbon buildup on the intake valves, which can cause them to stick. This will hinder the engine's performance since the chambers won't get the right amount of air due to the valves not opening. So I guess in the long run, it does help maintain engine performance and health. Be sure to check with your emissions laws first as installing them can be illegal.
I dont know specifically for your car but I can say why I would install a catch can.
On a gdi engine the intake gets foul up because petrol in directly injected into the engine and not into the intake manifold.
VW, audi and bmw I would almost say yes.
Toyota once again used their brain and have have gdi and intake manifold injector to clean the intake value.
The new bmw s63 engine I was reading has a catch system that now go directly back into the crank.
Performance I would say never notice a speed gain at all.
I used to have a v8 1978 war horse lol and put a catch can on that and every weeks it used to get full of oil and water. No gdi just good old fashion carburetors.
