(I'm 17 years old) -While accelerating from a stop, the transmission of my dad's 2009 Chevy Malibu went bad (started slipping and losing power). It has 144k miles, and it quite literally broke down before our very eyes. For the past month or so the car had made clicking noises after being shut off, which I told him was a sign of the transmission going bad. Now he needs an intermediary used car, in between now and the time it takes him to get a car which he actually wants. This intermediary car is eventually going to be my graduation present, because after he finds another car for himself it's going to me. This means that I get to pick the used car he gets (for under 10k) and I have a week or less to decide for him. What used cars should I consider??? Thanks in advance
Clarification: can you list other constraints for this vehicle? After it goes to you, how long (years and miles) do you need it to last you?
Hopefully it will last me a long time, but I don't need a car for anything crazy like long road trips or off roading. Mostly just going to be transportation to and from college. Either way, I want a good reliable car. Scotty normally says toyotas and Hondas, so I just wanted to see if anyone else had other useful comments to add. To the guy who said rebuild the transmission, it wouldn't be worth it. As was already stated, transmissions aren't rebuilt correctly half the time and the thing is already totaled. And I'd rather just pick out my own first car for fun anyways.
I wanted to also add Toyota Avalon, Lincoln Town Car (3rd Gen), Ford Crown Vic (2nd Gen), Mercury Grand Marquis (4th Gen), and Buick Park Avenue (2nd Gen).
Corolla, Civic, Camry & Accord.
If you get a good example of the above, you’ll probably be able to pass it on to your sibling or sell it in good working order, when you’re done with it.
Just be sure to have a professional mechanic inspect it thoroughly, before purchase.
All the best!
Hmmmmmmmm do you hot foot it off the light?
if all you know is gas and brake it won't matter what you buy
{pear}:exhausted:
Why don't you just get a rebuilt trans put in the Malibu and save yourself 10 grand?
Probably because barely anyone rebuilds transmissions correctly anymore. It's not like you can't find used cars for $3k or $4k.
