Cleaning exhaust with water

Hi,

like to hear from the guys/gals on your take for 'cleaning' the exhaust.

my mech sparyed water into exhaust and later revved real hard to get the water out..

at the same time soot and black carbon came out. After a few sprays, the gas coming out was clear and water coming out was white. Also the force that sprayed the water out from the exhaust was quite far... about 5 m.

is this normal way of cleaning the exhaust ? My car has no catalytic converter, as I live here in Manila, Philippines

I have never heard of anyone spraying water into an exhaust pipe and revving the engine hard to blow it out.

That's not normal. I've always used a rag to clean the exhaust, and to get inside the tailpipe I use an extender with a rag on the end. I'm not a fan of blowing water into the exhaust at all.

An exhaust pipe is like a chimney. If you are using it, it is always going to have some soot on the inside. I can understand running the car open throttle once in a while to blow out any carbon build up, but that is done on the move and under load....not in neutral with water shoved up the tail pipe.

Never heard of someone trying to clean the inside of the exhaust. It's not necessary at all, especially since a few minutes after starting the engine it will get coated in soot again.

When you clean your exhaust tips, do they stay clean? No, they get dirty after a 10 minute drive, so just imagine the same thing happening on the inside.

I doubt any damage happened to your engine.

this is the first time I've heard of this.

You're not the only one.....

How much did he charge you for this "service" lol?

And did he remember to top up your blinker fluid.

Do you have a diesel engine? He probably tried to clean the DPF. There is a risk it gets damaged. And new ones aren't cheap. The best way is to disassemble the DPF,  heat it and keep it at cca 650°C for cca 6 hours.

Sounds like a good way to rot your exhaust from the inside out.. especially the muffler
