2004 CLK 500 multiple issues

Hey Scotty, I got a EGR code on my Mercedes CLK 500 2004 I took it to my mechanic near by and he can't find the cause of it and he even said he put a new EGR valve in the car and it was still giving the same code. I drove it to Hilton head and put the gas cleaner in it before the trip on a full tank and when I got there the light came off but when I drove back home again, it came on as I entered my drive way?  I  also have to mention that I have followed you for a while and I even ordered some of my favorite parts from your amazon part recommendation list. I Take care of my car as I have had it since 90k miles, I am about to change the transmission fluid, oil, clean the MAF sensor, and change the filters alongside the air intake filter. I also plan on buying the full service manual for my car but i just cant find a reliable one for the M113 50 engine which is one of Mercedes Benz's best engines. I do hate my car for the electronic issues like you mentioned but I absolutely love the design and am in love with engine. I also need to say I do notice a strong smell of gasoline when I fill up the gas tank in my garage to the point of suffocation but inside the vehicle there is no smell at all. I was wondering if you could please give me some insight on what it could be throwing the code as it is so strange that once I would add the fuel cleaner and drive for a while the code goes away for a small period of time. Thank you.

What's the code and mileage?

The code is the typical P0400 and it has about 121k miles :/

Does your endless money pits and say hey that's a minor anti-pollution system but it is all computer run and you're going to have to hire a Mercedes mechanic if you want that fixed who has what's called a star tester that's with updates and equipment generally about $40,000 so they're going to take you to the. Me I would just live with it if it runs okay you worry about lights on an older Mercedes are crazy those things I can hook up my scan tool I'll probably have about 57 different trouble codes for my experience

Thanks Scotty, I will do that even though I would love to drive to Tennessee and visit your shop because Iv'e lived in Atlanta all my life and I don't know of any good mechanics around.

If you are experiencing fumes that bad, you need to get a Mercedes mechanic to look at it. Avoid the dealer as they will take your head off to fix it. A good independent Euro shop could save you money.

Just realize going forward that there is nothing cheap about owning an old Benz. You can easily spend more on repairs than a new car would cost you.

Yeah It's really hard to find anyone who knows anything and the dealer like you said is extremely pricey, they wanted 2k for my front left headlight which I replaced myself for 550$ not saying prices for the repair should be negotiable but that is downright greedy for a new headlight job.
