Confused about ATF labeling

I’m getting ready to change the automatic transmission fluid on my toyota pick up. I don’t think the previous owner ever changed it. Checked yesterday and it’s a brown color. My Toyota pick up requires dexron 2. It's a 1994. What’s the difference between say  dexron 2 and the current ones in the market. Do I have to use the official toyota ATF?

'Brown' is not what you want it to be.. It smells burned too?

What amount of bucks is added to the cost of fluidchange when you use the Toyota stuff?

Yeah which is why I want to change it. It doesn’t smell burnt but I’m planning to keep this truck till the wheels fall off. Brownish color. Just saw that the have dexron 3 compatible for replacing dexron 2. 1 quart is 25 bucks.

You can get something like Valvoline max life atf, or castrol trans max that is dexron 2 compatible.

Either will likely do fine, hopefully you caught it before the transmission is having any issues.

I have used valvoline max life atf in Toyotas as old as a 1999 Corolla and it worked fine.

You can get a gallon of either one for about $25.

The transmission is running good. I bought it with 157k miles and I’m trying to do a much maintenance as possible. New engine and transmission mounts. Thank you man I’ll look into that! 6 quarts of the Toyota ATF is 150 dollars.

Yeah that is crazy price. I would buy amsoil signature series before I bought the toyota atf, even if it was the same price! Amsoil cost around $50-60 a gallon I think.

So I just looked at the label on the red valvoline max life and it’s compatible with dexron 2 3 and 4. Thanks man you just saved me 100 dollars.

Happy to help! You likely want to drop the pan and change the filter while you are at it. If the fluid is Brown, you likely will need to do a few drain and fills over a period of time to get most of the old stuff out, unless you are planning to do a fluid exchange.

That was my plan. I would change it every 30,000 miles to eventually get it all the old stuff out. You’re awesome.

always provide your miles please, per the posting intstructions.
I would be hesitant about changing ATF on a 30yo vehicle.
Please read our ATF article in the FAQ.

No. Dexron is actually GM's specification, but many companies make it.

Thank you. The truck has 157k miles and recently checked the fluid. Doesn’t smell burnt and is light brown. Was mostly confused of the dexron numbers.
