Should I buy a Crosstrek

Hey Scotty (anyone)

I already asked and got well enough answers for the Toyota Corolla and Camry. Now another vehicle that I always liked was a Subaru Crosstrek. Can these cars last “forever” ? I would probably get a non turbo engine that’s automatic if anything. Any suggestions on this model or others possibly? Just trying to slim down my options. Also happy thanksgiving everyone!

Nothing lasts forever, of course. A non-turbo Crosstrek can last a good long time if you take care of it, but you would want to ignore Subaru's "sealed transmission/lifetime fluid" mantra and change the CVT fluid regularly to get the best life out of the transmission. Also the models with the 2.0 engine are generally considered to be underpowered. The engine you would want is the 2.5 in normally-aspirated form.

Scotty recently reviewed the Subaru Crosstrek:

Just saw that he dropped that video. I’m going to have to check that out. Awesome glad to see this much appreciative.

OK, first a little clarification.  Subaru does not sell a turbo Crosstrek currently, though there are rumors about the next redesign.

I wouldn't put them on Corolla Camry level of reliability.  But as AWD crossovers go they're about as good as there is, especially for the price.  The FB20 motor (base and premium trim levels) is slow but very well made.  It is also one of the cheapest and easiest engines to service yourself that you can buy new.  The FB25 (sport and limited trims) I am less familiar with, but as far I know is also solid.  Either should be good for 200,000 miles if you maintain it.

The question mark is the CVT (not the manual, it's bomb-proof).  I would avoid the early ones, but they seem to be improving for each model year.  If you are looking new, I think the CVT should be fine (but I would not tow anything with it).

Just be aware that Subarus are inexpensive cars.  A lot of the minor parts (trim pieces, lug nuts, stuff like that) will need attention over time; nothing that would compromise long term reliability, just annoying.

Otherwise, the Crosstrek has been discussed EXTENSIVELY on this site.  Take a look at the search bar above.

Cheers!

Absolutely, that totally makes sense. Much appreciative for the comment! I figured they’re pretty solid vehicles, but you guys seem to know most. I’d rather get a Toyota Camry probably over everything else but I do love the crosstrek look!
