cv axle seal question

I'm about to put in a new seal before I replace the driver side cv axle. I was wondering do you guys ever put anything on the inside of the seal so it will seal better, like a super lube or something? Or would that just screw things up?

No, it is not necessary. Do not add anything to seals and gaskets unless the instructions specifically call for it.

Mountain ~ I installed the new seal then started my car. I wanted to make sure it would start after sitting a long time. Transmission fluid came out of the seal. Does that mean I didn't seat the seal correctly? I had not yet installed the new axle. Do you think i'm OK? I'm assuming fluid would always come out if the car is started and no axle is installed.

the old axle could be worn out in that spot, causing it to not seal properly. Hopefully you didn't damage the seal during the installation.

It's possible. Even if you had read the posting instructions and posted your vehicle details, I do not know how every single transmission is designed. But the seals are generally there to keep fluid in the transmission.

Apologies. I usually do. it's an 01 buick park avenue. So older car. I think the seal is in there nice. Maybe this always happens. That's what i'm hoping! My fault for starting the car!

oh! you mean you had nothing in there at all. I thought you were using the old axle until you received a new one. Well no surprise there then. There's probably bearings or something on the trans output which need lubrication.

Ha! Yes, nothing. Thank you for putting me at ease.

Well, I installed the new cv axles, struts, and tie rods. Wow! What a job! Thx again for your help.

If the axles haven't fallen out yet after a trip to the grocery store and the alignment shop, they are most likely in there good, wouldn't you say? That's the only thing I'm worried about!

If you installed them correctly (snap ring seated fully into groove) then they shouldn't fall out.

Right. it was hard for me to tell on the passenger side, but i've heard the passenger side goes in easier.
