I have never owned a cvt transmission but am going to buy a new car in coming months and most of what I am looking for are now using cvt's.I have heard nothing really good about them ,noisey lots of maintenance not reliable like the auto transmissions are .So what do you suggest ?I will find a car with a real transmission (automatic 6 to 9 speed what ever)if you agree about the cvt. If you think a cvt transmissions are ok what brand is best ? Thank you in advance for your help!

The Toyota CVT has the least issues amongst all. It is not that they are crappy, they just shift differently compared to automatic transmission. Test drive them and see if you like them or not. They tend to get better mpg.

None are as reliable as non cvt's... it's that simple imo.  Not that they couldn't be made better it's just that they are made to just barely be able to handle the power applied...if they were just built to be 10% more heavy duty (handle 10% more power/torque) they would last significantly longer.  The theory is sound, it's just they are built to the minimum to maximize roi for the mfg.  I wouldn't put a plastic chain on a bicycle... yet you could and it would work... for a bit.

Depends on the brand. Newer Toyota and Honda CVTs are actually pretty good and Scotty said the best ones were made by those two companies. A Nissan or Subaru CVT would be one to avoid. A torque converter automatic made by Toyota would be nearly bulletproof though.

CVT is the "wave of the future" for smaller cars. We are stuck.

Nissan owners are still reporting failures on newer CVT's.  Might want to avoid them for now.

Likewise, those Nissan/Jatco CVT's are installed in some other vehicles (Mitsubishi, Jeep ....)

Just stay away from CVTs. Get a car that's equipped with a traditional automatic tranny that actually shifts gears. Even the newer CVTs are having issues...
