I have a 2017 Toyota Corolla with almost 155k on the odometer I am concerned about my CVT transmission I wanna make it last but I’m scared to have anything done because I’ve heard your not supposed to change the fluid if it’s never been changed before I’m the second owner of the car and idk if the previous owner has changed it before any tips on how I can make it last? Any advice?
I’ve heard your not supposed to change the fluid
Heard where?
Yes you should absolutely change it, and especially with CVT you should change it even more often.
I don’t have a heavy foot I drive it a mix of city and highway I do get on it while getting up to speed for the highways that’s about it I have just heard that you shouldn’t change the fluid if it’s the original fluid and with high mileage like mine
Heavy foot, light foot.. it doesn't matter. City driving is actually the worst for it but regardless, you should change the fluid about every 30k. CVTs are just a weak design, and they don't last very long. So you should maintain it well. THAT is how you make it last.
What you heard about not changing fluid MIGHT apply to high mileage, failing AUTOMATIC transmissions, but never CVT. You never heard that here, or from Scotty.
Please go watch Scotty's transmission videos on our FAQ page.
Would us still be safe to change the fluid at 155k mileage or is that to high?
I would check with toyota, they may have records on the maintenance done to it.
I would still change it regardless if it has been done or not.
I I had a carfax done on it it’s been kept up with normal maintenance but I didn’t see anything about cvt fluid change
Change it! CVTs are NOT like traditional automatic transmissions. The grit does NOT hold anything together with friction, like a standard automatic transmission.
The Car Wizard did a recent change on a JATCO CVT transmission, on a 2013 Nissan Cube. It's a good way to learn about these particular transmissions, insofar as he shows what the pan, the screen, the fluid and the filter look like, even after a 20K interval between changes. It's worth the watch.

Changed mine 2013 1 year ago. Definitely feel more smoother ride. Mine is seal up so I took it to the dealer.
One other thing: Use the OEM CVT fluid ONLY! Anything else is a dangerous roll of the dice. (BTW, while the fluid is expensive, it's nothing compared to the cost of a transmission failure).
I guess the tranny oil bottle said " oil will last a life time of transmission"
yeah... thats because you dont change it then its prone for your tranny to get clogged in dirty oil boom car wont shift.
I strongly believe you should change it.
