If you don't know how old it is just replace the stupid thing.

There are no date codes to my knowledge. If the belt is cracked, replace it. The rubber eventually dries out and starts cracking. There isn't really a set interval for belt replacement. The outside environment is too varying.

It most likely depends on more than one variable. If you drive too little, the belt will eventually dry rot. If you drive frequently and always put the pedal to the metal, this strains the belt tensioner pulley and causes the belt to wear out faster.

Skimping on a $40 belt isn't the smartest thing if that's what you're trying to do. Flip it over so you see the ridge side. If your belt is cracked, replace it.

@justin-shepherd A good quality belt (like Continental or Gates) for that vehicle is under $30 at rockauto.com. The tensioner and idler pulleys would also be suspect if original.

I just use OEM Motorcraft belts. I bought a Gates belt when I was first fixing up my Ranger and it was a quarter-inch too small, oddly. I've stuck with OEM belts since.

We also really don't know the guy's symptoms. He basically just asked when it's time to change one, lol.

@justin-shepherd I usually use Continental belts, they've been fine. I think Bando is OEM for some manufacturers.
