I have a 2018 Lincoln MKZ. It has 25000 miles. I am buying it out to ride out these high car prices as the residual value is $4000 lower than the sale price.
The dealer requires a safety check at their location. They told me the rotors are too rusted to pass and that I should replace the rear brakes entirely. The rear brakes have 6/32 to go. The rotors don't look rusty. Is this a scam?
Your brake pads should have more than 6.4mm in order to pass safety. You need to have them replaced as they are too close to pass.
As for rust, without seeing them there is no way to say. But it sounds like the dealer is shooting you straight. I would do as advised.
Sounds like you are buying a leased vehicle - does your lease contract specify that this "safety inspection" is required in order to make the purchase? If not they are lying to you right off the bat. I smell a scam.
I don’t know where you live but where i am rusty rotors should not fail an inspection and brake pads just need to be 50% or better remaining which for a rear pad that sounds closer to 70-80% remaining for fronts probably 60-70% remaining. But if it’s a lease to retail inspection they generally are required by the manufacturer so the inspection is unavoidable
By the way, the front rotors can be turned on the car. They don't need to be replaced.
