Hi Scotty. I drive a 2000 VW Golf Mk4 with the 1.9tdi engine 110bhp variation of it. It's a superbly reliable car and great mpg but recently went out one morning and it wouldn't start. It would crank and crank for days but nothing. There were no warning lights on the dash. I tried giving it power with jumper cables as I thought it might be the battery even though it would crank but nothing. I tried to push start it and nothing. I called a tow driver and when the guy arrived instead of towing the car he just took out a long piece of simple electric wiring put one end on the positive terminal and the other on the valve for the diesel pump. The minute I turned the key over it started no problem. The tow truck guy believes it's the immobiliser shutting off the fuel supply. I took it to my mechanic regardless and explained the situation. After a full week I get a call from the shop and the mechanic says they cant figure it out as the car would now start every single day without question and scanning it returned no codes they didnt want to throw parts at it guessing so left me monitoring for now and I got myself a piece of wire if it happens again. Do you think it could be the factory immobiliser causing the problem or something else? I'm a big fan and love your videos
I'd get your VW checked by a good scan tool, and have a talk with the tow truck guy - sounds like he knows something the mechanic doesn't.
Probably. We had a Golf 4 Variant 4motion. The system was unlocking the car by itself and you could hear click lock buttons usually make. It was annoying.
Agree but also check ground straps for tightness/corrosion.
@hillbilly
Do you mean me or topic starter?
The OP... was just adding to your answer that I agreed with.
@hillbilly
Thank. I will consider that if anything similar happens to any other car since we don't have that one anymore. Do you think @mideus should also check that?
Yes, why I posted it for him to see.
My bad I should've mentioned that I did check them there was no corrosion and tightened them up. thank you for the responses
Thanks guys, I appreciate the info.
