I am looking to buy this 2001 Toyota Sequoia. It has 223,517 miles, and the seller is selling it for $6,000. I know they want to negotiate it down, and I would be comfortable buying it for $5,000. However, when I went to see it, I noticed some surface rust on its underside. I know rust is car cancer, but if I bought this car, would I be able to drive it around for another couple of years just while I'm in college and starting my career, or do you guys think the rust would develop into something unusable?

it seems more like superficial rust to me as long as you get it with a hammer and pieces don't crinkle it's probably okay
It should be OK, although it depends on WHERE you're going to drive it. If you're going to tool around the West and Southwest, that won't be a problem, at all (as long as you stay away from long trips or residence on the coasts, from Galveston to San Diego).
If you're going to use it in the East and North (and parts intersecting), it should be fine IF you get some New Hampshire Oil or Fluid Film on it, before the salt hits the underbelly.
With that caveat aside, enjoy!
