DOT 3 or 4 Brake Fluid?

Topic starter

I have read that DOT 4 (and 5.1) absorb water quicker than DOT 3 brake fluid.

Any truth to that?

My vehicles say to "Use DOT 3 or 4".

Any favorite brand to use?

DOT4 fluid is just DOT3 fluid with Borate Ester added to it, to elevate the boiling point. This makes DOT4 fluid suffer less brake fade.

If you don't tow or do a lot of prolonged heavy braking, it doesn't matter what you use. Buy the cheaper one.

Yes, that is true. DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are more hygroscopic than DOT 3, but they handle higher braking temperatures than DOT 3 for better braking performance.

I personally like using OEM, but any brake fluid at the autoparts store works just fine. I would use DOT 4.

See below for more insight and product Scotty has used before:

Unless you truly need the braking power is say that just keep to the dot 3. It's cheaper and probably the og fluid in your car, unless it's a bmw or benz. Lasts longer than dot4 and 5.1 as well so less changing the fluid required. Then again most people unfortunately opt out of this, my mom's old corolla with 230k miles never got a brake fluid change lol

Probably best to stick with the manufacturer's recommendation. Mine specifies DOT4 so that's what I use, and I change it every few years using a Motive power bleeder.
