Early 90s GMC Sonoma or 90s-Mid 2000s Toyota or Honda

Hey there Scotty, I'm getting my learners licence this week and I've convinced my parents to let me buy a vehicle once I've completed drivers Ed. Since I only have my L, I will only be able to drive with my parents in the car obviously, so I won't be driving it a whole ton (as much as I'd like too). I have an offer on the table with a friend of my dads for a 1991 GMC Sonoma 2WD 2.8L V6 with a 5 speed manual transmission. It only has 100,000 miles on it, no mechanical issues, it needs a paint job, but it doesn't have much body rust at all, and the frame is solid. He wants $1000 for it. However, where I am gas is anywhere from $7.30/gallon to $8.70/litre. So therefore, I'm considering trying to find a Toyota or Honda, but the issue is where I am the cheapest I can find one that doesn't need major work for under $2500. I calculated the price for a full tank of gas for the Sonoma, and it's anywhere from $146-$174. I'd assume that a Toyota or Honda would be significantly more affordable on gas than the truck, but I'd have to save up for longer as well as have to pay more for insurance. What do you think is the right decision? Thanks

1991 GMC Sonoma

You are talking about a 31-year-old car. If we assume that the powertrain is solid, the other parts of the car are about to fall off. In the best case scenario, you may consider it as a project car, not a daily driver. This is the same case for older cars regardless of the manufacturer. Save up more money and consider getting a newer car instead of a truck.

He wants $1000 for it.

that would be a big "no thanks" from me.
