Engine making knocking sound.

Hi Scotty,

I have been following you in YouTube and you have given me some great advice on what to do and what car to buy.

As a result, I bought a Honda Civic 2006 model used from and individual, the car looked well cared for based on my assessment, the engine sounds good at the time I purchased it, there was no check engine lights when the engine is running, but as you said, it should should show all the lights when you on the ignition.

Basically the car was vibrating when the a/c engages so I decided to clean the throttle body, after that, the engine was revving high, around 1000rpm, I saw another video that said reving the engine to 3000rpm will correct the high, I did it while the engine was at the normal operating temperature but It didn't change so I decided to do it in the morning when the engine was still cold, I revved it to 3000rpm in the morning while it hasn't gotten to normal operating temperature but still its didn't change the high, I had to pay someone with a scanning tool to do the relearn, which worked, it idles at 800 to 850rpm now.

The problem I have now is that the engine is making clicking or knocking wound when I start the car in the mornings, and it vibrates in the morning before reaching normal operating temperature, once it gets warm, the vibration will almost disappear.

I used all my life savings to buy this car and I am having trouble keeping my head straight, it's really bothering me, I don't what to do.

What do you advice me to do?

Could it be as a result of revving while it was still cold?

Any help you can render will be highly appreciated.

Can you make a YouTube video of the noise & post the link here?

Yes I can make a video.

Here is the video of the engine noise, it actually increases gradually from around 3 minutes into the video.

It doesn't sound quite like a rod knock to me, those tend to be deeper and get louder under load. This is what that sounds like:

Yours is a lighter tapping. As @Doc says, check for manifold leaks, those can make some nasty noises. Check your the bearings on your accessories (alternator, water pump, etc.). If it has a timing chain check the tensioner, a chain flopping around will make bad noises. Other than that it could be a valve tap due to sticky hydraulic lifters.

I am jumping forbjow with knowing it's not a knock, than you guys for your help and support, I will keep you updated on my progress with the diagnosis and hopefully repair or replacement of the offending part.

@ Doc thanks
@ Chuck Tobias Many thanks.

Check for vacuum leaks, especially because you said the problem goes away when warmed up.  I's suspect a leaking intake manifold.

Many thanks.

How do I do the vacuum check please?
