Engine oil - only viscosity?

Hi Scotty I have a couple of questions about engine oil for my 2008 Jeep Patriot 2.4L which has 206, 000 kms (128,000 miles).

- 5l Kirkland oil good quality?  The last 5 years I have been using Castrol Edge.

- Does it matter that Daimler Chrysler ms 6395 isn't stated on the bottle but owners manual requires it for Jeep?

-is it only matching the viscosity that matters or 5w20!

Only two things matter generally speaking:

1). If the engine has been ran most or all of its life with conventional engine oil, stick to that. If you've been using Edge full-synthetic, stick to synthetic.

2.) the manufacturers recommended oil viscosity. As a general rule you should use the highest recommended viscosity unless you live in a cold climate.

Both are synthetic oil. Is the Daimler Chrysler ms 6395 rating stated in the manual important or synthetic 5w20?

You should always follow what the manufacturer calls for. With that being said, if the specs do not match up, best not to use it.

We are saying to use the viscosity that the manufacturer recommends. Viscosity is 5W-20 or 5W-30 in terms of engine oil.

I get that but is the Daimler Chrysler ms 6395 rating important if one oil says it and the other doesn't

I would say stick with what you are using, if conventional use conventional if synthetic use synthetic, but why change to something if the current product isn't giving you issues, the 5qt is cheap at Walmart, I use Castrol edge full synthetic usual cost about 22. Just use correct viscosity.

Costco doesn't make oil. They just buy it from a major oil producer and slap their label on it. It might be Castrol with a wig on.

If the manual says the engine needs it , then you should probably use it. Here are MS-6395 certified oils:

Are you saying to Stick with Daimler Chrysler ms 6395?   I was not sure if it was essentially a name or if it was a necessary rating for my vehicle.

The ratings that they attach like that are the detergent and additive packages that each manufacturer recommends. Its not a huge deal but I would recommend using what the manufacturer calls for.
