Greetings Scotty. My vehicle is a Iveco daily 35s11, 2.8 liter, year 2000. I had it overhauled after it was blowing blue smoke particularly on start up and also the oil pressure dash light was on. They checked the bearings and noticed that some copper was now showing, however the piston rings where still in shape but we put new ones, we also put new stem seals. Overally the engine was still in good shape as the crankshaft was not damaged at all and the engine block was good as well. So after the engine was assembled back together, it is still blowing blue smoke. I am now dont understand where the blue smoke is coming from. I tried to see if the turbo is blowing oil by placing my palm against the pipe as the engine was running but no oil on my palm and as the turbo pipe was disconnected blue smoke still came out. Also the oil pressure light randomly turns on and off.
Thanks
Were the bores and crank journals actually checked with a micrometer to see that they were within spec? New piston rings and bearings won't help if the bores and crank journals are worn. A wet versus dry compression test will tell the tale for the cylinders. I'd verify oil pressure using a mechanical gauge. Another possibility is worn valve guides and seals permitting oil to be pulled into the combustion chambers.
where the blue smoke is coming from
Most likely your cylinders went oval, consider replacing the engine.
Also just out of curiosity, as someone who doesn't trust Italian products - what millage did it have at time of fault?
And how often did/does it develop issues?
