Engine swap/ECM VIN problem

A couple of years ago I bought a 2001 Ford Ranger that had previously had an engine swap.. It was originally a 4.0 with an automatic transmission. It is now a 3.0 with a manual trans . Everything was great for a while until the ECM fried  Being ignorant about these, I thought I could just get a rebuilt one and plug and play, Boy was that wrong. The company I bought one from in North Carolina sent me one that matches the VIN on the truck and not the ECM that I sent them. Needless to say it don't work very well, and that company would not respond to my emails or phone calls. I just want to get it to work, I went to my local Ford dealership to see if they could help, but they told me the truck was too old and they won't touch it. I've searched over the Internet, stopped at some repair shops, and I am getting nowhere. Who can help me? Where do I need to go? Can I just get the right ECM and give the company a fake VIN that matches, since I don't have the VIN that the donor engine/trans came from?

Well, I'm rather amazed at work after swiping from one engine style to the other in the first place. But what you'll have to do is get a matching ECM by the numbers on the ECM. Search around by using those numbers and not the truck itself. VIN number is useless in this case
