Hey Scotty ...
Here one for you ... I was talking to European lover and he was telling me most European car are idoits because they dont change their oil.
I ask him how often should change your oil and he said 7,500 km not every 15,000km.
I agree with him this will make the car last longer but the person owning the car is not an idoit he following the European car service schedule of 15,000km for oil change. So i asked who an idoit - European car for saying this (15,000km oil change )and believing in the brand name or is he an idoit and should not follow the car company advice and change his oil every 7500km.
..... in the end I just had to end it on ... it your car do what make sense and you feel good about ...
So what you’re asking is “who’s the bigger fool? The owner who follows the manufacturers’ instructions, or the manufacturer who made these bogus claims in the first place”
And the answer is: neither.
the car manufacturer isn’t a fool - they’re just interested in your car lasting less.
The service interval is calculated in a manner that’d prevent warranty claims but will make your car wear out faster and allow them to sell more cars.
with that being said, many owner’s manuals - point out that engine oil should be serviced more frequently under many conditions (like city driving, cold temperatures and much more), and require the owners to regularly check its level and color (a lot even go as far as instructing the owner to do so every 300 miles (500km)) - if the owner follows the recommendations, although they are ridiculous, he’s not really risking causing too much wear.
The owner isn’t a fool either.
Although mechanical knowledge is IMO an absolute must, not many people actually know much about car maintenance.
It’s the mechanics’ duty to advise the owners of proper maintenance intervals that’d be appropriate for their car.
Also it’s not only European car makers - nowadays almost everyone does it including Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki, Mazda and others…
In many cases it’s not just 15,000km (9.5k miles) but with modern cars, like the Renault Meganè IV - on some engines in some markets Renault recommends an even more bogus 18.75k miles service interval (30,000km)
@Dan, thank you for educating me about this: "The service interval is calculated in a manner that’d prevent warranty claims but will make your car wear out faster[...]". If/when I have a car, I will factor this in to my maintenance regimen. Grateful to you!
ok
{black}:idontknow:
in some manuals, it says 15000 miles!!! Not 15000 km!!!
@Kaizen, thank you for pointing this out.
